You, the living
by Roy Andersson
Denmark/France/Germany/Norway/Sweden, 2007, 94', colour
"YOU, THE LIVING is about the human being, about her greatness and her miserableness, her joy and sorrow, her self-confidence and anxiety. A being at whom we want to laugh and also cry for. It is simply a tragic comedy or a comic tragedy about us."
Roy Andersson
Reviews
"A comic symphony on the meaning of life."
Justin Chang, VARIETY
"Roy Andersson excels in visual humor (...) A vision that keeps a sense of distance and burlesque poetry."
Frédéric Strauss, TELERAMA
"Andersson is a genuine one-off and to be treasured, not least for the precision of his pacing and his studio-shot compositions, which together contrive to make the very bleakest of scenarios at once affecting and hilarious."
Geoff Andrew, TIME OUT MAGAZINE
"Monty Python shot by Dreyer."
Gérard Lefort, LIBERATION
"One of European cinema's most distinctive stylists, and darkest humorists, returns with a tragi-comic panorama of the human condition (...) It's like a collaboration between Strindberg and Jacques Tati."
Jonathan Romney, SCREEN
"Kafka on acid (...) Hilarious scenes that will have you rolling on the floor laughing."
Michael Althen, FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG
"Virtuous in his direction, Andersson offers us a film that is fluid, accessible and full of enjoyment. (...) He is a rare filmmaker."
