Karen is a refugee. In order to remain in Italy, she maries a sailor from the Stromboli Island of Sicily. Soon, their different mentalities and the harsh lifestyle on the island strain the couple. Hated by the townfolk and practically indifferent to her husband, Karen runs away and reaches the peak of the volcano, where she asks god the strength to survive.
