Soi cowboy
by Thomas Clay
Thailand/United Kingdom, 2008, 117', black&white/colour
In Bangkok, a corpulent European man and a young, pregnant Thai woman live together in near silence. His large body stands out in marked contrast to her tiny frame. He gives her presents - she has a growing collection of stuffed animals - and takes viagra pills. She is looking for security and he is the best way to stay out of Soi Cowboy, the red-light district where they met. She likes him but sleeping with him is a duty. Meanwhile, in the countryside, a teenage mafia enforcer is employed to deliver his older brother’s head…
Reviews
"Clay’s technique has been enriched with compassion and imagination, gentless and humour. (...) SOI COWBOY is made with fluency and style, and Clay has brought off an impressive, athletic leap of the imagination."
Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN
"A very un-British director, Clay is doffing his hat here to auteurs such as Carlos Reygadas and Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Perhaps the least British UK film you’ve ever seen, SOI COWBOY confirms -- as his first film didn’t quite -- that Clay is a man to watch."
Jonathan Romney, THE INDEPENDENT
"SOI COWBOY demonstrates a growing maturity"
Leslie Felperin, VARIETY
"Un décrochage digne de David Lynch (INLAND EMPIRE) et du jeune maître thailandaïs Apitchapong Weerasethakul (TROPICAL MALADY) (...) un sacré cinéaste, avec lequel il va falloir compter."
Norbert Creutz, LE TEMPS
"a significant British discovery "
Jonathan Romney, THE INDEPENDENT
"SOI COWBOY apparaît progressivement comme une belle boîte à surprises dont chaque ouverture amène une nouveauté inattendue. (...) SOI COWBOY, film vaste, inquiètant, lynchien en diable, diaboliquement mis en scène avec un sens du détail vertigineux."
Vincent Martini, EXCESSIF
