19
by Watanabe Kazushi

Reviews
"Minimalist dialogue, distinctive visuals, intriguing deadpan humor and ambiguous homoerotic atmosphere. (...) Indie rock sounds add to pic’s endearingly shaggy allure."
Dennis Harvey, VARIETY
"A journey into the uncertain - simultaneously a road movie and an ingenuous buddy movie. (...) One is reminded of Chris Marker's "La jetée" (...) or of Jim Jarmusch's black-and-white road movies."
Anke Sterneborg, SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG
"A peculiarly stretched, post-capitalist form of existentialism unfurls before our eyes and celebrates the crime as the ultima ratio of leisure society. (...) Stylised images whose beauty can't fail to make an impression. (...) Yearning is painted in silver."
Birgit Glombitza, DIE ZEIT
"19, a bittersweet road movie."
Claude Lequereux, INDIEWIRE
"A scenic tour de force, an almost magical account of existence."
Christina Moles Kaupp, DER TAGESSPIEGEL
"Kazushi Watanabe's debut feature is a stroke of genius. A succinct comment on an alienated world, using absurd humour and a vast tapestry of associations."
Claus Löser, BERLINER ZEITUNG
"A minimal and graphical journey between Jarmush and Kitano."
Julien Welter, REPERAGES
"The pictorial work is a true achievement. The perfect framing is met by visual agony. (...) Captivating."
Sébastien Lecordier, CINE LIBRE
